Investment Banking Recruiting - How does it work?

Hey all,

I'm a little confused about how the investment banking firms recruit, so I thought I might just ask you guys. I have two friends who already received emails/phone calls to have phone interviews. One of them has one with a BB firm that does not recruit out of school. So, he must have applied online. My other friend received an email from an elite boutique, but he is not on campus so that may be the reason. How come they are receiving notifications already and I have not? Am I in a bad position? My school's job board also says that I didn't get an interview for an IBD Summer Analyst at a BB, but according to one of my contacts within the firm, I was put on the interview list. I am completely confused and going to call my contact first thing tomorrow. Can anyone shed some light on the recruiting process?

The school would only have knowledge of OCR recruiting, i.e. who the firm is going to interview when they come to campus. However, the firm will likely have a list of candidates that they want to screen apart from OCR and if they perform well in prelim screens they will be advanced to Super Day interviews. I would inquire about your status with your contact at the firm. At least that way you know where you stand...

Hope that helps.
