I think I've narrowed what I want to do down to equity research or IBD. To be honest, I would take an offer in either of them for the upcoming year, but didn't know whether it was acceptable to gun for both positions within the same firm. Can anyone help me out?
There's no right answer and it's out of your control (lack of info on recruiting). Job recruiting is largely luck based so you really can't measure the costs and benefits. Just pick one strategy and go.
If you insist on a better answer start asking bankers and recruiters and how their firm treats this issue.
Some firms will let you interview with multiple divisions in your case ER / IBD are close enough it would be more difficult to explain Operations and IBD... You should consider the Merchant Banking Division as well.
