Is that even legal?
Hi All,
I'm not sure if it the right place to ask about this but you guys are always so insightful so it would be nice to have your opinion.
I posted a while ago but just to give you an idea of what I do... I graduated from a target school almost two years ago and obviously at that time it was really difficult to get a job.
So i took a "trading assistant" role at a 2nd tier bank because there wasn't much else I could get anyway and I had to pay my student loan! I have been in that job for a year and half and hated every minute of it but despite my best efforts I cannot seem to find a new job (im either too junior or too senior or the firm doesn't get the headcount approved etc).
I feel very low most of the times but I am thinking that I shouldnt give up and sort of try my best again and again and things will eventually work out. Now my problem is in my current job.
I get zero consideration - I'm like the team's slave and that's ok with me as I am only junior. The main problem is that over the months I have definitely moved from an assistant role to a productive one. Two of our biggest payers are accounts that I take care of. My boss will not requalify my role or give me any acknowledgement for this. He's like "Well done you but yeah...you're still where you started as far as we're concerned"
When we had a chat about this the conclusion ended in this is not the right time and I dont know what to say. While I am happy to take as much cr.p as can be , I feel that this level of unfairness is just too much too deal with.
You know, I know the trading floor is a hard environment and that's fine. But if there's one thing I believed is that it was a place where meritocracy and achievements actually counted.
I don't know what to do and I'm wondering if it's ok for firms to just employ someone as a sub-standard team member and deny them of any acknowledgement. The discrepancy between what I do on a day to day and my job description is massive and I don't know how to handle this situation.
Any thoughts?
I don't see any crimes committed. You're two years in, relax.
At this point in time this seems like your best option. Just keep doing as much as you can, picking up as much extra, meaningful work as possible. Give it 3 or so months and then re-evaluate what you've had the opportunity to do and if anyone has noticed your contributions. In the meantime start networking and building up contacts. Making a lateral move isn't easy, so meeting as many people as possible is important. Do a search for how to network.
jump ship.
