Is there a way to reverse damage you have done to yourself in a job interview?
So i had second round interview for a energy trader development program. My first interview was so good that the interviewer told me that I should inform them if I have offer from another firm. In second interview I bullshitted so much in answering behavioural questions that now I feel like I have made a very bad impression in front of the HR partner and Head of business. The head of desk wanted me to convince him that I am determined to drag myself through all challenges and become a leader in the institution. They are hiring only 8 people for this program across Europe and I fucked it up. So now I want to know if I should reach out to the person who interviewed me first and see if he can vouch for me? I also networked with a trader on LinkedIn who works on same desk and he replied to my many questions. What will be the best strategy to leverage initial impression I created in first interview? Can I do something to increase my chances before they reject me?
I seriously doubt it’s recoverable if the interviewer feels the same way, but you might as well try. I think it’s a good idea to send him and others an email acknowledging some of your mistakes, which you could say were driven by your strong desire to work for the firm, and then re articulate why the firm is a great fit for you and your career aspirations and why you’re a great fit for the firm and role. I think it’s important that the interviewer who has a bad impression hears from you directly, although it will also help if you can get others to vouch for you.
Otherwise, I’d focus efforts elsewhere. When interviewing (or in life in general), don’t be a bull shitter; be yourself, be confident and energetic, and be prepared. Self promotion in interviews is critical, but there’s a clear difference between polished confidence (thoughtful, articulate responses, good eye contact) and bull shit (exaggeration, disingenuous or fluffy answers that demonstrate little thought, bad eye contact, over confidence). The two are obvious to interviewers and the latter is very offputting. It’s also important to connect with the interviewer more personally to demonstrate you have a good personality and are down to earth (smile, crack some light jokes, find common interests/experiences, take a genuine interest in the interviewer, etc.).
Everyone’s screwed up interviews so don’t beat yourself up over it. Use it as a learning experience to improve for the next one, and prepare your behavioral responses ahead of time (STAR method) since that’s the MOST important part of a hiring decision. Good luck!
