Is this job opportunity worth it?
Hi All
Currently working in Treasury in banking. Involved in capital and liquidity adequacy and market risk control of Treasury desk (rates, liquidity, vol, credit etc).
Been approached for a treasury role at a global well known market maker / high frequency trading firm. Initially was like meh I'm unsure but let's go through the process. Then everyone I talked to appeared to be incredibly smart and interesting, I like the questions I was asked, the culture seems excellent, business is profitable and the role grew on me. Fast forward many interviews I've been offered the role and it's a slight pick-up in comp compared to now.
Banking is broad. When you trade you have to look at many aspects such as where the funding comes from, rates, credit and now even climate change risks for LT assets. Several factors are taken into account when you stress the capital base, that capital is related to positions you hold onto. It requires skills you can transfer elsewhere (other banks but also online payments firms / lending apps etc). Market making however seems very narrow. You hold onto the position for a few seconds (if that), there is no funding implications. Stresses are related to flash crashes. the treasury of a market maker seems to be more of a corporate treasury team than a place where you will see arbitrage trades like in a global bank.
Am I right to think that moving to the treasury team of a market maker, however smart people are (good for stretching and networking) / high is the comp could be less stimulating? Could it be harder to go back to banking? Or am I dead wrong and actually it could quite challenging / stimulating?
Any insight very much appreciated!
