Job Search Advice

Quick Summary:

I graduated from a non-target in 2023, and just finished a 6 month internship in VC.

After my internship ended I spent some time thinking about what I wanted to do, and decided that breaking into an IB/Capital Markets role would likely be the best foundation. Obviously this is easier said than done so I signed up for the WSP Financial Modeling & Valuation Course and began studying the BIWS technical questions. I also started setting up coffee chats, and just had a talk with an MD today. He mentioned a department of his bank that deals with startups and VC/PE firms which was intriguing since I would have some relevant experience there. Others have also spoken to me about private credit being a great role to get into, while some say I should stick to applying to VC's since thats my only experience.

Heres my question: At this point I am really just trying to get my foot in the door somewhere so I can start building a foundation for myself and a fruitful career. With my only experience being in VC, and not being a "recent graduate" anymore, what do you think is the best move for me. I don't mind swinging for the fences, but I still want to be realistic about what is attainable. Basically, if you were me, what would you do?

I appreciate any and all advice, thank you everyone!

This isn’t so much as advice for helping you get a job but more of a way to help you mentally.

It took Einstein 9 years after graduating, 4 years his miracle year, to get a professorship gig. And he only really got this because of a friend’s nepotism. If it takes you less than 9 years to get the job you want then you are already doing better than Einstein
