Junior looking to break into ECM / ESG — advice

I’m a junior and just declaring finance, really interested in ECM and ESG / sustainable finance. Trying to figure out how to break into the field from here.

Some questions I’m struggling with:

  • How do juniors break into ECM / ESG if you’re starting late?
  • Which entry-level roles or teams should I target first?
  • How do you network effectively when your school / local market has very few ECM / ESG alumni?
  • What skills, tools, or experiences actually make juniors stand out?
  • Tips for tackling smaller markets vs big hubs like NYC?

Any real-world advice, personal experiences, or actionable tips would be insanely appreciated.
