Landing a job in NYC during COVID

I’ll caveat this post by saying i know i didn’t set myself up for the path of least resistance, but I didn’t know exactly what i wanted until recently. So just hear me out:

Trying everything I can to break into the NYC Finance scene to start out my career.

Ideally gunning for 1st yr IB, but I come from a non-target private school (3.9 undergrad, MSF in my 4th year). Targeting boutiques as they’re probably my best shot, but keeping all options on the table across the finance spectrum. Interned at a boutique HF and then AM at a large institution (tons of exposure to the dynamics of our sponsors’ deals). Ready to prove myself - just need to get in front of people.

Most places I’ve interviewed have since gone on hiring freezes (thx corona) and currently not getting great hit rates trying to network via LinkedIn/cold emails. Could move to NJ & bunk with a buddy after my (virtual) graduation to network and get my footing, but doubt anything will be open by then. Anyone going through something similar or have experiences/advice? thanks guys

I understand the desire to do that.

If those other jobs will get you good experience, you may want to consider starting there. It's easier than ever to switch jobs to a different city once you have marketable experience.

Depends on the quality of those opportunities, feel free to run it by us here on WSO if input would help.
