Late internship search strategy

Hello, I recently just made the decision to want to start my career in IB. I am a about to finish my 3rd year of school. Obviously, I am far too late to try to get an internship for the 2023 cycle. Generally, when is the deadline for the summer of 2024? I’m already seeing a lot of listings for summer of 2024 and I’m scared I missed that cycle as well.

I’m using this summer to try and get certifications instead. I got told to take the SIE, maybe a class in Excel, or others told me Bloomberg. Any recs?

You are behind the ball, but definitely not too late. Some bulge brackets (BBs) recruit into the summer. However, I would suggest targeting middle market (MM) or lower middle market firms (LMM).

In terms of recruiting, networking is the most important part. Get on the phone with alums, colleges in your conference, really anyone you can find commonalities with. Without internal support you’re fighting an almost impossible battle (depending on your background).

Once you have a set plan for networking and start making calls you may want to plan out some behavioral answers. On the phone you will commonly asked to tell the interviewee about yourself, why you want to go into IB, etc,. Having strong answers to these questions will go a long way on initial contact. After that is taken care of I would take a look at some of the technical guides. Imo the SIE and Bloomberg certs would not be the best use of your time given where you are in the process.

Good luck!
