Lawyer to Investment Banking- good path? Or go into different banking industry pre break-in?

God. I've been thinking about this so much lately it's driving me up the wall.

A little bit of background: getting ready for senior year as an econ major, have interned at a law firm, currently working a sales job for an oil and gas company (I'm actually killing it but I fucking hate the idea of sales), 3.95 GPA at a large state school in Texas (big network- you probably know which school I'm talking about), have taken the lsat and got a 174.

As is clear, I have no financial experience in the real world. I have some modeling/forecasting skills from the econ courses I've taken, that's it. I thought IB was closed off to me as an econ major at a non-target, so I didn't even try. My first mistake. Instead, I decided to gun for law school and did pretty much all the right things. But after being more involved in law and kind of figuring out what I finally wanted and exploring some things during undergrad, I wanted to get more involved in business. My mind went to IB/PE/VC. It interests me a lot more than a job at a corporate congolomorte law firm doing mind-numbing work (that is ultimately inconsequential imo) for the first 4 years of my career. I want to drive deals, make deals, value deals, etc. NOT sit there and get told what the deal is and what to draft into a legal doc. God the idea of billable hours makes me want to crawl up into a hole.

I basically just don't want to go to law school and be stuck with being a lawyer for the rest of my life. I want to branch out and actually get in the weeds of business. But I'm not against going and think it's a valuable skill and will likely provide unforeseen opportunities down the road..

So- how THE FUCK can I break into IB at the point I'm at. No banking experience, just sales and law (fuck) and an econ degree. Do I bite the bullet and hope I can get out of some v10 law firm and into banking somewhere down the line?

I'm 100% taking a year to work after undergrad before I go (if I go) to law school- what job can I take in the meantime with the experience I have to see if I can break into IB from there and feel it out?

If I go to law school- is there a reasonable chance that I can still break into IB? How can this be done and how can I leverage myself best?

Thanks guys
