Lessons From Recruiting
The title says it all, wanted to share some lessons I learned from recruiting for SA 2024.
- Your resume does not have to be stacked to have a chance
I know a lot of students looking to get into IB feel the need to boost their resumes. From my own experience, you're better off spending that time networking (not saying internships don't help). I've seen students at my school with only a student investment club on their resumes get interviews and offers. Don't worry if you don't have finance internships on your resume. The key is to apply early, as soon as apps open send in your resume even if you don't think it's good enough.
- Take advantage of January
A lot of schools have the entire month of January off. This is the best time to study technicals and network with alumni. Most of us have nothing to do for most of the month. Don't just spend it playing video games. Network and study up, it'll help when things start to heat up in Feb and Mar.
- Practice your STAR questions
When I was interviewing, the questions that I messed on most were STAR-style questions. I think we don't place enough emphasis on these questions compared to technical ones. STAR questions allow the interviewer to know your workstyle and cultural fit, practice them to the best of your abilities.
- Learn to take hits
One of the worst feelings I've felt in my life came after I messed up in an interview. Bombing an interview can be soul-crushing, especially if it's with a dream company, but you have to learn to take that hit. Learn from these experiences, and I promise that offer letter will come.
Hope these tips helped and good luck to anyone searching for a job right now.
Recruited as well for '24, and have to agree with all these points especially 3 and 4. I would also add being able to read the room and knowing how certain people will react to your comments. I struggled with reading a person and sometimes adding unnecessary things in my interview answers. You should be able to see if someone is straight to the point in an interview, or if they want to chat about golf for 45 minutes with you. Getting the interviewer to actually like you goes way further then being the most technically sound person in the candidate pool.
