London recruiting for postgrad student

Hello all,

I have a couple of questions about FT recruiting as a new grad who will be fresh out of the MSc in Finance at LSE in around a years time. I have absolutely screwed myself on job searches in my undergrad, and am l looking to fix my idiotic errors in the hopes of getting a FO IBD position.

1) How important is networking in London? As a ignorant academic who thought that stellar grades could automatically land me a job in North America, I had an extremely rude awakening.

2) How is the FT job market for London grads? The European M&A scene seems to be going downhill, so should I apply to summer internships instead and hope for a conversion?

3) How important are IBD/M&A internships? Would internships from non-IB roles such as ER put me at a significant disadvantage?

4) How good is the LSE MSc in Finance in terms of recruitment? Would I have any advantage over a grad from its counterpart in the MSc in Acc&Fin for example?

I realize I've asked a lot of questions, but any feedback would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

My background in case it helps:

-Top Canadian non-targ undergrad, very top of my class of around 500 -Internships = scarce, one no-name PE leveraged finance internship, another in ER at a sovereign wealth fund -Currently preping for CFA 1 and will probably be completing a summer internship at a small Wall St firm this summer after the June CFA.

You should be fine. LSE MSc Finance places extremely well in London and you are relevant experience. The only issue you might have could be with Visa sponsorship.

Based on my (very humble) experience: 1) Networking is not as important in London as it is in the US 2) FT Job market is quite strong in my opinion - most of the UK students are recruited in undergrad but MSc guys also get spots from the top continental schools and LSE/LBS/etc. Depending on experience one could advise to apply for a summer internship instead of for FT directly. Knowing that, most of the FT class comes from the converted summer guys so I guess it is way easier to get in this way. 3) IBD Internships are important for FT (though for some reason MS seems to be recruiting at my school FT some people with no experience) but less for summer. ER internships are also relevant especially if you have a good brand name behind. Your LevFin PE experience should also be well seen. 4) LSE MSc Finance is the flagship program at LSE for finance recruiting. Maybe MSc Finance & PE is as good. But not the MAcc & Fin (which still places very well). Overall, I think placement is very strong and LSE is definitely the school name you want to have for finance recruiting
