Looking for a better career in finance

I have been working in the finance industry for about 14 years or so. I have a bachelors and master degree in finance and I have my 7, 63 and 66. My jobs have been in customer support - placing trade for clients. To wealth management - helping financial advisors create proposals, performance reports and trade their accounts. And now I work on an equity and options trade desk where advisors call in trades and I place them - there are many other functions (trade corrections, approving large trades, etc.) but that is the bulk of it.

I want to advance my career and I am kind of lost right now to be honest. I have always been interested in equity markets - research and trading but looking at the jobs in those areas, it just seems hopeless. I am not a recent graduate. I did not go to a top school and I did not major in math or accounting. It seems that a job in those areas will be very difficult for me to get into.

If that is true what other areas should I be looking at? I could stay in this type of role and look for manager roles doing the same or similar job I guess and I would be ok with that but I want to really get focused on my career - it's better late than never.

I would appreciate any and all insight you could provide. I understand that this is my career and I have to decide where I want to go, set a goal and take the steps to hit that goal. But at this point I am just looking for some help and advice.
