Looking for career advice

Hello everyone, this is my first post on here. Looking for some career advice from anyone who has gone through something similar or simply has advice for my situation. Recently (summer 2025) graduated from a top 3 uni in the UK and had a few internships in startups/real estate etc. Most recently I interned at a private credit firm in a more middle/back office role where I was told I would convert my summer internship into a full time role, resulting in me putting recruiting on the back burner. On my last day I was told that instead of taking me, they will have to open applications again for people to apply, and I will be considered for the role. By the end they ended up hiring someone else (with substantially more experience than me), leaving me jobless in the UK. I have been searching for any finance role in the UK and elsewhere with no luck for a month by now, and feeling a bit lost. Any advice on how to proceed? How to recruit in a targeted way rather than applying to everything with no luck? Any advice would really help.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a targeted approach to help you navigate your situation and improve your chances of landing a finance role:

1. Leverage Your Network

  • Alumni Connections: Reach out to alumni from your university who are in finance. They can provide insights, referrals, or even pass your resume along to hiring managers.
  • Cold Outreach: Use LinkedIn or email to connect with professionals in roles or firms you’re targeting. Keep your messages concise: introduce yourself, explain your interest in their role/firm, and politely ask for advice or a quick chat.
  • Networking Events: Attend finance-related events, conferences, or meetups in your area. These can be great for building connections and learning about hidden opportunities.

2. Tailor Your Applications

  • Resume Customization: Adjust your resume for each role, highlighting relevant skills and experiences. For example, emphasize transferable skills from your internships in startups and real estate.
  • Cover Letters: Write personalized cover letters that explain why you’re a great fit for the specific role and firm. Mention any unique experiences or skills that align with the job description.

3. Target Niche Opportunities

  • Boutique Firms: Focus on smaller or niche firms that may not have as competitive a recruiting process as larger institutions.
  • Non-Target Roles: Consider roles in corporate finance, FP&A, or even consulting as a stepping stone. These can help you build relevant skills and eventually pivot into your desired finance role.

4. Enhance Your Profile

  • Certifications: If you have downtime, consider pursuing certifications like CFA Level 1 or financial modeling courses. These can make your profile more competitive.
  • Technical Skills: Brush up on Excel, financial modeling, and other technical skills that are often tested in finance interviews.

5. Prepare for Interviews

  • Behavioral Questions: Be ready to explain your story, including why you’re interested in finance and how your past experiences make you a strong candidate.
  • Technical Questions: Review finance concepts and practice technical questions. Treat every networking call as a potential interview.

6. Stay Optimistic and Persistent

  • Rejections are part of the process, especially in a competitive field like finance. Stay positive, learn from each experience, and keep pushing forward.

7. Consider Professional Services

  • If you’re struggling to get interviews, services like The Lobby can connect you directly with analysts who can provide guidance and help you secure interviews.

By focusing on networking, tailoring your applications, and continuously improving your skills, you can increase your chances of landing a role. Keep pushing, and don’t hesitate to ask for help or advice along the way!
