Maybe I should do more to become a "personality hire"?

An article In today's WSJ states that people with charisma get hired preferentially and get promoted more relative to others. I work in the typical dull and sometimes dreary workplace atmosphere. Maybe it would help my career to brighten the place up a bit.

Likeability is the x factor in success. It's the differentiator, the je ne sais quoi. If you have a solid foundation for what your line of work takes, personality is what takes you over the top.

Charisma just sounds like this innate, either you have it or you don't type thing. It's really not.

Dude, this shit is super easy. Be genuinely interested in people. Ask them questions. They don't even need to be soul searching, deep, earth shattering. "how are the kids", "what did you get upto this weekend".

You want to take it up a notch? Remember what they told you. "Hey how was that concert you said you were going to". "Is the kid doing better". "Did you hold up ok on that big project you were on"

You'd be surprised at how little others take a GENUINE interest in the people around them. We just live in our own heads in our private bubbles.
