Mitigating Circumstances

I have mitigating circumstances which affected my A-level results severely (end of high school exams, very important in the UK). I was in hospital for most of my final year and had to self-teach my a-levels in 2 months - so it's pretty exenutating.

Whilst my results aren't dire, they are lower than almost all other applicants will be. I've made it up for it by interning at a hedge fund this summer (fresher summer) the equivalent of a 4.0 GPA in my first year of university and a range of other EC's (running a business, founding/chairing a society at uni).

But, with the amount of applications banks get will it be a case of "any reason to bin it and it's binned" or will my circumstances be taken into account and my first year of uni used as an academic indicator instead? What will the analysts that read my app make of it?
