MM Recruitment from IB

How does MM recruitment work from i-banking? Is it HH driven? I assume there are no OC spots so is it a long interview process over the span of your analyst stint? FWIW, I am looking at credit roles (currently going into LevFin/RX).

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about MM recruitment from investment banking:

  1. Headhunter (HH) Driven Process: Yes, recruitment for middle-market (MM) roles is often headhunter-driven. Headhunters will typically reach out to analysts at MM banks, especially if you're in a sought-after group like LevFin or RX. However, the level of outreach may not be as aggressive as it is for bulge bracket (BB) or elite boutique (EB) analysts.

  2. On-Cycle vs. Off-Cycle: For MM roles, the process is less likely to follow the traditional on-cycle recruiting frenzy seen for mega-funds (MFs) or upper middle-market (UMM) private equity. Instead, MM recruiting tends to be more spread out and can occur off-cycle. This means the interview process may extend over a longer period during your analyst stint.

  3. Interview Process: The interview process for MM roles is generally less intense compared to MFs or UMMs. It often involves multiple rounds of interviews, focusing on technical skills, deal experience, and cultural fit. Given your interest in credit roles, expect a strong emphasis on your understanding of credit analysis, restructuring, and leveraged finance.

  4. Opportunities in Credit Roles: Your background in LevFin/RX positions you well for credit-focused roles. MM credit funds or direct lending platforms often value candidates with this experience. These roles may not always follow a rigid recruiting timeline, so staying proactive and networking can be crucial.

  5. Proactive Networking: While headhunters play a role, networking remains essential. Building relationships with professionals in MM credit funds or direct lending firms can help you uncover opportunities that may not be widely advertised.

In summary, MM recruitment from investment banking is typically headhunter-driven but less structured than on-cycle recruiting for larger funds. The process is more spread out, and your LevFin/RX experience aligns well with credit-focused roles.
