Moving into Investment Communications

I currently work as a Communications Manager for a large Investment Bank in Toronto; I've been in the role for four years and was a Financial Analyst (project finance and some modelling) for two years before that. I have a BA in English and an MBA. I like my job but I'm looking to do more work directly with investment firms (hedge funds, PE, etc)--I consider myself to be a very strong writer and am skilled at taking complex ideas and topics and putting them into clear language. Also, I love the industry and my current role doesn't involve as much client comms/analysis as I'd like, with more of a focus on internal communications and marketing support.

My question is: are there a lot of dedicated Communications roles within investment firms, or does the work tend to be decentralized or outsourced? I wasn't able to find "Communications" as a role or business line when signing up for WSO, which doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. And if there are roles available, what are the traits/skills/experiences for ideal candidates?
