Need advice on this reply from an MD

Ok Monkeys, gonna need a little help on this one.

So I’ve been emailing alum for a couple weeks now and today an MD got back to me. Awesome! Go to open it and he (in my mind) declined my request for a phone call by not mentioning it in his response. He thanked me for my email and provided me the contact info of another senior-banker alum from a different bank.

I’m not sure if I should reiterate my interest in the phone call? Here’s what I’m thinking of responding with.

“XXX,

I really appreciate the referral and will definitely contact XXX.

I understand this may be the extent of the help you can offer as XXX doesn’t typically recruit from “semi-target”, however I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you and show I’m a qualified candidate who would bring value to your firm. Everything I’ve read about XXX has been very positive (culture, client interaction, leadership) and as such I’m very interested in the SA 2018 role.

I of course understand this may be unrealistic and again am very appreciative of your referral and response. Have a good week.

Best, CreditMunich”

What do you guys think? Lost cause or worth the try?

You have been passed off, it happens. I networked into a connection who advised me to reach out to his old friend, a founder and current CEO of a MM IB. I sent a very long personal email and in it mentioned that I knew he was very busy, so if he didn't have time, I would be happy to speak with an analyst, associate, or anyone else he wanted to refer me to. He never responded, but I received an email from an analyst almost immediately.

Your email is well written, but my 2 cents would be not to push it.

Best Response

I wouldn't push it and keep it simply that you appreciated the reply and will follow-up with XYZ banker. He's not interested in getting on a phone call with you for whatever reason, so I would just take the W of getting the referral, thank him and run with it rather than "however I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you and show I'm a qualified candidate who would bring value" etc.

It's very possible that the bank is, for whatever reason, not interested in taking you on right now (emphasis on the now). What could be great is if you could ask to keep in touch with MD BSD and try again at a later date.

I would send the email exactly as is. Your email shows your understanding of the firm and that you are tenacious - a quality sought after in banking and not always available from people who come from "target schools". The worst thing that can happen is he ignores your email ... Definitely a risk I would be willing to take if I were in your position.

I personally come from a non-target, applied to my job 24 times over the course of a year (junior year to senior year), emailed people relentlessly, and worked LinkedIn as much as possible. I am now in CBG TMT in SF. Not too bad of a turn out if you ask me..
