Networking e-mail
I met an Managing Director in IBD at a regional office for a BB at an information session four days ago, we had a good chat. I'm writing him an e-mail thanking him for his time, with a couple of question too.
I'm wondering how I should open the e-mail. He introduced himself as "Jack", but his full name is John Smith.
Should I start with:
1) Dear Mr. Smith
2) Dear John
3) Dear Jack
Also, should I be using "Dear", or "Hi"/"Hello" (i.e. something informal)? He was quite personable/informal while talking to me, if that helps.
One last question: should I have followed up immediately after the event, or have I waited the right amount of time?
Mr. Smith. Always better to be conservative if in doubt. Email that evening or first thing the next day.
Asatar nailed it, that is the best way to get it in. DEF Mr. Smith, he can always ask you to call him Jack or whatever AFTER you address him formally, and this does not work vice-versa.
Also calling right after shows the impression that you are hungry for his assistance and that is the goal to appear that you are hungry without straight up telling them. Also afterwards send a thank you card to him.
Good Luck, A fellow Monkey
so true. always be very formal with the name on first email then on the follow up emails follow his lead. Also try to see in that email, if you havent already ask him too many question, to schedule a time for a meeting or a call.
Give him the option of either but make the call as a last resort. He will indicate if he can or not and he will also show you if he is willing to help.
