Networking email help

Hi yall !! I’ve been networking this summer. Usually I’ve done messages on Linkdeln but recentally I’ve been emailing. But I’ve barley been getting responses 😭

What are some good ways to email an investment banker for a response ? How would it need to be set up? How long ?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key tips for crafting effective networking emails to investment bankers:

Email Structure and Content:

  1. Concise and Professional:

    • Keep your email short and to the point. Investment bankers are extremely busy, so a concise email is more likely to be read.
    • Ensure your email is professional. Avoid casual language and check for any spelling or grammatical errors.
  2. Email Format:

    • Intro: Briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are reaching out.
    • Body: Explain why you want to work at their firm and why you should be considered. Avoid subjective terms and focus on concrete achievements or experiences.
    • Conclusion: Make a specific request for a phone call or meeting. Suggest a specific time and place if you are asking for an in-person meeting.

Example Email Template:

Subject: [Your Name] - Aspiring Investment Banker Seeking Advice Dear [Banker's Name], I hope this email finds you well. My name is [Your Name], and I am currently a [Your Position/Student at XYZ University]. I am reaching out to you because of your impressive career at [Banker's Firm] and my strong interest in pursuing a career in investment banking. I have been following [Banker's Firm] and am particularly impressed by [specific project or aspect of the firm]. I believe my background in [relevant experience or skills] aligns well with the work being done at [Banker's Firm]. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to speak with you for 15 minutes to learn more about your experience and any advice you might have for someone looking to enter the field. Would you be available for a quick call next week? If so, please let me know a time that works best for you. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best regards, [Your Name] [Your Contact Information]

Additional Tips:

  • Follow-Up: If you don’t get a response, wait two business days and send a follow-up email as a reply to your initial email.
  • Personalization: Customize each email to the individual banker. Mention specific details about their career or the firm to show that you have done your research.
  • Professional Email Address: Use a professional email address, preferably a Gmail account for better archiving features.

Tracking:

  • Use Excel to track each person and which step of the process they are on. This helps you stay organized and ensures you follow up appropriately.

By following these guidelines, you can increase your chances of getting a response from investment bankers. Good luck with your networking efforts!
