Networking + IB Recruiting Questions
If you are reading this, thank you for your time! I am a sophomore at NYU Stern with a 3.9+ gpa and I’m looking to recruit for investment banking this year. I am currently doing a search fund internship this semester and I didn’t do anything really heavily finance related this past summer. I also just started reading the BIWS and Rosenbaum stuff and I have no finance knowledge right now so I’m trying to get a head start on my technicals. I’m not involved in any clubs and I haven’t reached out to any alumni yet and I was wondering if some people here could tell me if it is too early to start emailing alumni or if that is something I need to be doing right now. Additionally, would someone be able to help me get a good sense of where I’m at right now. Am I very behind or in alright shape? To be honest, I’m a little lost right now because there’s so much different information out there so any advice/input is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Liberal Arts Major that started learning the technicals last January over winter break and got an offer in April. You've got plenty of time to start!
I liked the "30 Common IB Technical Questions" article from WSO as a building block then using the BIWS 400 questions to expand on that
You can start networking whenever but in hindsight I would've started later in the fall with follow ups during the recruiting season. Just my opinion but IB Rosenbaum is pretty dense for someone just starting out so I would focus more on condensed interview technical guides
Also you should just apply to everything, even if it's a group you wouldn't necessarily accept an offer from, the more interview experience the better
You’re extremely early. You’ll be fine.
If you are willing to work hard, rush BAP or AKP. If you can get into AKP during fall, you’ll have a much easier time networking and landing offers
Would definitely get involved on campus - other people can add the Stern-specific clubs, but I always like to see people involved in things that aren't just finance. Look for clubs that plan events around campus, student government, or causes you care about. Just having a 1000% finance resume is a bit hardo.
That said, start networking soon - now is a bit soon IMO but October is a good time - Stern has a lot of OCR but if you can get contacts in your groups of choice that will help a lot.
Agree with the person who said Rosenbaum is too dense for most people, you're really not expected to know that level of detail. If you can take any intro accounting or finance classes either this semester or Jan term, highly recommend - it will teach you so much of what you need to know for IB.
You're already ahead with a 3.9, internship, school etc, so buckle down the next 6 months and you should be all set to land IB
I'm in the same spot as you, did a SF internship (4.0 GPA), 2nd year, but only difference is that I did a bunch of clubs and networked a ton. Many of the people l spoke to said that I was ahead of the curve, so it looked good on my part that I was proactive & early. I'd definitely recommend the above comment to join not just finance clubs but ones that show your personality and interests, like joining a healthcare-based club if you are interested in doing healthcare IB.
