Networking Question: Alumni Connection Platform vs Work Email

So I've been networking with alumni using a connection platform by my university: basically alumni sign up and offer to connect with current students. It's been good response-wise because these are alums who are are willing to help.

That being said, a con is that messages are sent through that platform, that is, separate from their work email (they do get an email when they've got a message from the platform). It's been a week since I sent my first initial outreach messages, and I'd like to follow up with those I haven't gotten a response from.

My question: should I follow up by messaging a second time on the platform, or should I find their work emails and follow up that way? The reason why I ask is that I have seen that it's bad practice to "reply" to an email when following up, and you should draft a **new** email. What should I do, in terms of follow up?
