No Return Offer = Involuntary Leave on Background Check? Worried
No return offer last summer. Very few interns got any. Someone influential on my desk asked HR to extend me one, but no dice. They didn't have the headcount, I think. Now I'm doing a background check with a similar tier firm, and they're asking me if my leaving was involuntary. I'm assuming I have to say yes. Couple of questions:
- Would this possibly result in the offer being rescinded?
- Someone's willing to serve as a reference for the background check, I'm assuming I have to make the template myself. If I just write a one sentence: "___ did well, I'd recommend him/her," would that make up for it/be fine? I don't want to sound too effusive, not sure if the person would sign off on that. Otherwise, maybe I could ask that person if he'd be comfortable vouching for me before writing the template?
- In my other reference letters from other past employers, should I send different templates or is it fine if I have all of them be the same with different signatures?
return offers are not mentioned in internships contracts. They are a short term contract, no more no less so you left the company voluntarily due to the end of your contract.
The form states that the employer choosing not to renew a fixed-term contract counts as involuntary leaving. Wouldn't this mean that it was involuntary?
Bump. The form they gave to fill states that the employer choosing not to renew a fixed-term contract counts as involuntary leaving. Wouldn't this mean that I have to check off involuntary, despite common practice?
Thankful for any insight.

If what you are telling the truth, you should be fine. Tell potential banks that you enjoyed your summer internship and did a good job, but there was simply no headcount for your group. Then mention you have a good rapport with the group head or an md and they pushed for you, but no dice. You would be happy to provide a letter of reference from that md corroborating your story. Case closed.
