IB Off Cycle Internship: Start - Stop - Start again in the Summer?

Currently interning during the school year (fall semester) at a small MM 10 person firm where I go in to the office 3x a week usually working about 28-35 hours a week. They've already mentioned that this could roll into the spring semester given my academic schedule accommodated and then further into summer internship and full time offer afterwards.

Long story short my academic schedule doesn't look like it is going to be able to accommodate me working in the Spring semester. If they offer me to work during the spring and I say I can't due to classes but the summer would be fine would I lose my chance for the summer spot due to the on and off again aspect?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for internships to have flexible schedules, especially when they're accommodating students. If you're unable to work during the spring due to academic commitments, it's important to communicate this to your employer as soon as possible.

Express your interest in continuing the internship during the summer and ask if it would be possible to pause your internship during the spring semester. Most employers understand that as a student, your academics come first.

However, every situation is unique and it ultimately depends on the firm's needs and policies. It's possible that they may need someone who can commit to the spring semester, but it's equally possible that they'll be understanding of your situation and willing to work with you.

Remember, communication is key. The sooner you discuss this with them, the better. They may even appreciate your proactive approach and your commitment to your studies.

And hey, if it doesn't work out, don't sweat it. There are plenty of other opportunities out there. Keep your chin up and keep swinging!
