Paid Interns Get More Job Offers

In a report by WSJ's Shayndi Raice, paid interns get more job offers than unpaid interns. This doesn't come as a surprise to me and it shouldn't to you either. Let's take a look at why.

As you can see from the graph, those that fared worse as unpaid interns worked for non-profit or local government.

To summarize, it's all about who you know. So if your dad isn't a CEO or you don't have any family that can help you get a internship/full-time offer, start networking.

As you mentioned, very unsurprising.

A lot of people will like to point to this reason below and blame a somewhat unfair system: i) Many paid interns are handed their roles due to connection (ex. family and status) and those same connections serve them well in the future

But to me, the most compelling and simple reason is just: ii) The paid internships are the most desirable and competitive, and, as such, will attract and hire the better students (grades, scores, leadership, interview skills, etc.). Those better students continue to out-perform and have more promising career prospects.
