Path to Green Card at UBS

Incoming analyst at UBS in their NY office. Not thinking of buy-side recruiting because I’m trying to see what my path to a Green Card is via employment. At what point do I become eligible? VP? D?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the path to a Green Card through employment in investment banking, including at UBS, typically involves the following steps:

  1. H1-B Visa Sponsorship: As an incoming analyst, your first step is likely securing an H1-B visa if you are not already on one. Many banks sponsor H1-B visas for analysts, but this depends on the firm's policies and your eligibility.

  2. Green Card Sponsorship: Generally, banks are more likely to sponsor Green Cards for employees at higher levels, such as Vice President (VP) or Director (D). It is uncommon for firms to sponsor Green Cards for analysts or associates due to the significant time and cost involved.

  3. Timeline: Even if sponsorship begins at the VP level, the process can take years. For example:

    • After filing for a Green Card, you may need to wait for your Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
    • Depending on your country of origin, there could be significant backlogs in the Green Card process, especially for countries like India or China.
  4. Alternative Options: If UBS does not sponsor your Green Card early in your career, you might consider:

    • Internal Transfers: Moving to a UBS office in another country and later transferring back to the U.S. under an L-1 visa, which can lead to a Green Card.
    • Networking and Advocacy: Building strong relationships internally to advocate for sponsorship earlier in your career.

It's crucial to discuss your immigration goals with UBS's HR or legal team to understand their specific policies and timelines.

great, another international coming to UBS

its the leaderships new strategy to hitting our #4 in the usa goal, just hire a ton of internationals/H1bs and all the mandates across middle america will come our way.     If Im a white boomer CEO from Indiana with a solid 300 million EBITDA business with stable cash flows - Im giving the mandate to the team with 90% internationals.

Funniest

UBS isn’t aiming for $300 m EBITDA businesses anymore, it’s $10 bn or bust
