Phone call prep
Have 30 minute phone call set up with family friend next week who has offered to share his extensive prof. network. Trying to break into any industry in my major city but most interested in commercial RE and/or politics but not picky. Most interested in high-paying corporate role but happy to just get call/interview anywhere. 24 y/o graduated year ago, worked lame administrative role last year out of undergrad then moved to current major city.
What should prepare for, how to make good impression. What to talk about for 30 minutes? Can offer more specifics if needed but just need this thread's (in)famous advice in phone interviews (again it is with nice, family friend who can then refer me to certain contacts).
The fact that you said commercial real estate and/or politics should concern you. You're 24 dude, I'm not saying you need to have your PRECISE goals nailed down, but no one is going to take you seriously if you can't narrow your scope down from "maybe real estate investing, maybe public service." It's ok to sound pointed when someone asks what you want to do, there's a way to cast a wide net while also making it sound like you have specific goals. It will not make you sound picky, it will make you sound like you've done some leg work on your own and that you don't need to be coddled. If someone said "I'll speak to anyone about anything" to me while attempting to network, I don't care if I have the Pope and Seth Klarman on speed dial, I'm not putting you in touch with either of them.
