Phone interview request

Hey fellas, is it acceptable to ask for a phone interview or a skype interview if you are offered an in person interview for a full-time position? I live far away so I'd have to fly or drive 15+ hours (roundtrip) mid semester, but it's the city I am targeting and I'd probably take the job if offered. It's an entry level ft trading position with a summer start date. I'm still an undergrad. +I have no idea how many people they interview. I just applied through LinkedIn and was offered an interview, no networking done. What do I do? I don't think firms actually offer full-time positions without meeting the candidate face to face, right?

What round interview is it with them?

Find out how many interviews it is- if it is only 1 no big deal. If it is three, before accepting the interview date say something along the lines of could we do it on a different date or by phone/skype. Ask, while subtlety suggesting, if it is easier for them you can do the first round by phone/skype and the final round in person because you would love to meet them and see the office.

Only once was I immediately disregarded for asking for an alternative to a first round in-person interview. Being physically present helps a person connect more, so being there for at least one will help your chances.
