Pivoting from FP&A to Equity Research/AM

Hello All,

I’m a senior graduating in May from a southern non target. I’ll be joining a Fortune 500 company as an FP&A analyst after graduation. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to land a job in equity research or AM. I was wondering what I could do to set myself up to pivot over from FP&A? Would getting the CFA level 1 done while I still have a good amount of free time be worth it?

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, pivoting from FP&A to Equity Research or Asset Management is definitely achievable with the right steps. Here's what you can do:

  1. CFA Level 1: Yes, pursuing the CFA Level 1 is a great move. It demonstrates your commitment to finance and provides you with relevant knowledge for interviews. It’s particularly valuable if your degree isn’t finance/economics-related. Even passing Level 1 or signing up for it shows seriousness about transitioning into AM or Equity Research.

  2. Networking: Start building connections in the industry. Reach out to professionals in Equity Research and Asset Management through LinkedIn or alumni networks. Informational interviews can help you understand the roles better and potentially open doors.

  3. Relevant Experience: While in FP&A, try to align your work with skills transferable to AM or Equity Research. For example, focus on financial modeling, forecasting, and analyzing company performance. Highlight these skills when applying for roles in your target field.

  4. Internships or Side Projects: If possible, take on internships or projects related to AM or Equity Research. Even creating your own research reports or stock pitches can showcase your interest and skills.

  5. Strong Resume and Applications: Tailor your resume to highlight analytical skills, financial modeling, and any relevant certifications or projects. A polished resume can make a big difference.

  6. Timing: Use your time in FP&A to build a strong foundation and transition strategically. After a year or two, you’ll have more experience and potentially the CFA Level 1, making you a stronger candidate.

Remember, the combination of CFA, networking, and relevant experience will significantly boost your chances of making the switch. Good luck!
