Poor American education system
Does anyone feel like they didn't learn anything to prepare them for real world Finance in college?
The public American education system seems to be more disciplinary-focused: memorize as much as you can to pass the test then move on. Pre-college teachers are just baby sitters and the schools only care about state test scores for funding. College professors, in my experience, are more concerned with their research than actually helping their students learn the material. At my college, if you couldn't self-teach most of the material, you were screwed. I had to work full time to help put myself through college so I was extra screwed. I even had one professor that not only refused to take questions during lecture, but also told us that if we didn't spend an extra 20 hours outside of class studying each week (JUST for his class), there was no way we could pass his tests. My fiance is Swedish and he grew up with special tutors and mentors all throughout his pre-college education. His college advisor(s) genuinely advised him because they had knowledge and experience within his field. They weren't just someone with a liberal arts degree looking for a paycheck. His professors gave tests occasionally, but would slow down the course schedule if they could tell the entire class was struggling with any given topic.
I don't feel like I learned anything valuable in college to prepare myself for Finance post college. I feel under-prepared and under-qualified for interviews. Investment banking isn't even on my radar because I know I wouldn't be able to compete. And that seems to be what most of finance is: a competition. Corporate Finance seems to be the most tame and trainable field in the Finance realm. But I still find myself feeling lost and somewhat insecure about my career outlook. I even find myself having to use my free time to take Excel and VBA courses because we didn't cover how to apply our finance knowledge to computer programs... which is absolutely necessary if you're going to work in any field of Finance. Ugh! Fuck you Ole Miss!!!
Does anyone else feel overwhelmed? What are better ways to prepare oneself post-college??
