PwC Accounting or GS Finance
To my beloved WSO community,
When I was deciding between colleges, this forum was very beneficial to me in deciding where would be the best to pursue my career interests. Three years later, I'm in the midst of planning my future career and deciding between my career options.
So I am an accounting and finance major at a large middle tier private university. The two firms and career paths I'm debating between are Internal Audit, Staff Accountant at PwC or a starting associate at Goldman Sachs. I don't really have any background in IB as my education has mainly been in corporate finance and I am in Accounting Honors at my university. I was wondering what career path you think is better for someone unsure of what to pursue. How is the training at GS? I know all Big 4 train you from Day One of everything you need to know as if you come in on a blank slate. What does GS expect from it's associates?
To me as a first gen college student with parents who haven't been educated beyond high school I really have no exposure to what life would be like in Big 4 Accounting as opposed to big finance. I am very interested on hearing takes on the different perspectives on the opportunities for development and career progression at each of these firms/ how the work life balance would be in each field/firm,
I think you'll be an Analyst at GS.
At PwC, you'll be a "Revenue Producer" but you'll be a "Cost Center" at GS, so I think you should take PwC because it looks better for B School admissions.
And you can transfer to a F500 CF role after doing 2 year at PwC, which will make you even more competitive for a shot at a top B School.
Just my opinion.
I'm already in the process of finishing school. I'll be CPA eligible by the time I graduate undergrad so I don't plan to go to grad school as I've heard there's not much to be gained from a masters in accountancy. If I did go with PwC, I'd look to stay long term and eventually work up to partner as opposed to an exit to an F500. Further thoughts?
