questions about networking

Hi!

I have several questions about networking:

-Does it work in Europe (London/France/Germany)?

-When I call someone, will they offer to take my CV? Or I have to drive the discussion to my cv?

-During the call should I ask about his job ? (like a teacher who explains to me how IB works), or should I have to understand exactly his job and ask questions about his career choice ? (why  did you move to PE?, why did you change bank?, how did you manage the lack of sleep? ) or  the questions should be different?

-If I call someone and his bank launches an offer 3month after, how I have to ask him to help me? "Hello! how are you? I have recently seen that your bank is looking for an intern, have you some piece of advice? "

Networking works everywhere, but is less common in Europe (at least the aggressive kind). You should generally send your CV/resume in advance of the call. This will provide something to talk about. During the call you can certainly ask about his job and what exactly he does. If the person works for DCM, you'll research that and ask specific questions. You might ask which industries he covers etc. I wouldn't ask lifestyle questions (how do you function without much sleep etc), but ask work related or market related questions. If you apply to the person's firm, send a follow up later thanking the person for speaking to you (this will be your second thank you email) and let them know that you decided to apply etc and to which role you have applied.

Pretty much useless in the U.K.  this is not standard practice. Whilst in theory if someone reach out to me I could endorse that candidate and email HR with their resume, I would kind of be staking my judgment in that one so just don’t As it is out of the box.

Also everyone usually ask if I can refer them at the end of calls but as most people are just ignorant about IB, not super fun, and without exp I just tell them I can’t.
i have done it for like 1-2 people out of ~25 calls and ~50 people who reached out to me this year. But they really stood out.

I'm surprised that networking is not important in UK, because there is a french guy who sell masterclass to understand IB process, who said that at JPM UK there is an intranet in which every employees could put forward some application to summer.

Excuse my French ! (and my English also)
