I know the GS desk you're talking about. good/nice people on the desk and in general GSPB in Asia is considered to be one of the best, if not the best, PB team in the region. that said, no one on that desk in the last few years (as far as I can remember) has moved to a buy-side investing role. Generally, you just don't learn the skills needed to move to an investing role on a securities lending/stock loan desk. That's not to say it's not a good role but just may not be the best step towards an investing career.
Another question to ask yourself is which asset class you'd rather be in, equities vs. credit? If you have a strong preference for one then the decision becomes easier.
Thank you so much for your input. I actually have no idea which asset class to choose. However i am assuming even if I were to choose sec lending, as you said, it will not advance my career towards investing role in equities. If I prepare for CFA or business school, would it ultimately provide a route to buyside?
