RBC - Associate - Investment Advisor Internship
Hi WSO Community,
I have been viewing this website for a while now and benefited greatly from the abundance of knowledge being shared throughout the forums, guides, and blogs. Therefore a big thank you from a prospective monkey from the great white north!
Anyway, I was just recently interviewed at RBC Dominion Securities for their “Associate – Investment Advisor” position and was wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge about this position. It is an unpaid internship therefore was wondering if any monkeys on this forum successfully completed the program, and if so, describe a typical day at the office.
I really appreciate all your efforts in advance. Hopefully I can be in a position to help other prospective monkeys in the future!
Thanks again!
Oh and I tried using the search function, but unfortunately I was unsuccessful in finding any information.

If you're interested in becoming an IA then it's a fantastic program. RBC DS is the best brokerage arm IMO and hopefully you'd be thrown on a team in the Royal Bank Plaza offices - especially if you're lucky enough to go to their new offices opening in a few months (not on floor 39 but 21 or 22 or something), which will be shared with the private client group.
Sorry I can't answer your main question
Hey Cranson, I checked my inbox and didn't see any messages. Can you please resend it? Highly interested in following up with you. Appreciate it too.
Also Bob, this position I believe is located in the North York building north of Sheppard. The 11th floor is where RBC DS is located, and I have to say it looked awesome. I can just imagine what the new offices will look like at the Royal Bank Plaza.
In relation to trying to land a position at the offices on Bay Street, I noticed that RBC has similar part-time contract positions advertised on their careers portal. Was wondering if it would look bad on my part if I applied to those positions as well? There are two reasons why I am thinking of applying to these positions, one – It would not be an internship and I would get paid I believe, and second, be located downtown vs. North York. Although I am highly interested in the networking/experience aspect of the job as I am a second year finance student at a non-target - I’ll take anything I can get! =P
What do you guys think?
Thanks again fellas!

My brother did this about 5 years ago. He had a really shitty experience with it. His boss was just making him cold-call for 10 hours a day. He was basically an exec assistant for an IA.
To be honest, I would be fine with cold-calling part-time. Sure it's not the most exciting/interesting aspect in finance, but I'm going to try and use this opportunity to network as much as possible. I heard IA's provide reference letters and sometimes offer paid positions upon completion of the program.
I guess we will have to wait and see!
im assuming this is in the GTA area?
personally i did it back in my undergrad days, i also know a lot of ppl who did these internship as well. theres really no way to spin it, you just cold call a lot for the IAs, this isn't some crazy exp thats gonna blow ppl away, however its a pretty good resume filler for 1st, 2nd year undergrad
the experience may also vary depending on which branch/office you end up interning The bigger offices on bay streets will obviously have a bigger team of IA, so you can probably learn a little bit more about the industry from talking to them.
On the other hand, you'll likely learn a lot less if you were working in a smaller branch
Overall, don't expect to learn a lot from the internship cause u'll likely just cold call for them, however, it beats having nothing on your resume+ the IAs do write you good reference letters
