Reaching out to alumni MD vs non-alumni analysts?

Hi everyone. Suppose you have an alumni at a company that is a MD, would you reach out to him first for networking or an analyst from another university?

Additionally, what if the alumni is an associate or VP - is it still always analyst first?

Thanks.

Why would you not reach out to the MD / VP / Associate first..?

They more often have more input and influence in the recruiting process. They have a better view of the specific needs of the company and/or department you are interested in and know what opportunities are available, if any, for a person with your specific qualifications. If you can, form a relationship with this person and keep in touch with them if you really want to get in.

An analyst doesn't have much influence and at best can do a simple referral or connect you to HR or another person.
