Recruiting is broken, again

BB recruitment story

candidate 1: 3 BO internships at acceptable boutiques during his BSc in finance, but non-target

candidate 2: environmental volunteering, McDonald's (not jk), but studies at LSE (geography tho).

Candidate 1 rejected

Candidate 2 invited for 1st round

Give me a fucking break lol

Yeah it's broken, specially because of the diversity quotas. I am struggling to get SA 1st rounds (so far only 1), despite having a previous IB internship + going to target. Yet a friend of mine who didn't know what IB was two months ago just got two 1st rounds for FT. She doesn't even have previous finance/consulting internships!

studying finance isn't that useful for IB. If you need to study an entire degree to grasp basic accounting then...

University name is generally a better measure of intelligence.

If I see someone grinding at a tough job like candidate 2 and making it to a top uni, I will never not be impressed. The skills from those jobs of listening, learning, being efficient, and having thick skin are all necessary for succeeding in finance. Furthermore, that candidate landed at a top uni despite having to grind a tough job while other applicants were likely able to only focus on their applications and school.
