Referral Rate During Networking Calls
I'm a sophomore at a target (non HYW ivy) who has been networking the last few months. I've done ~50ish calls so far and am trying to assess whether I need to change something up.
At the end of every post-call thank you email, I ask if they have anyone I might benefit from speaking with. I would say the rate that people actually refer me to someone else in their group hovers around 25%. Is this typical or indicative that I need to make some improvements on how I go about these calls?
I realize this is kinda a common sense question, but I've found it really difficult to assess how calls go unless they are incredibly good/bad.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, a 25% referral rate from networking calls is not necessarily a bad thing. It's important to remember that not everyone you speak with will have the time or the right connections to refer you to someone else.
However, there's always room for improvement. Here are a few tips to potentially increase your referral rate:
Make sure you're building a genuine connection with the person you're speaking with. This can be achieved by finding common ground, showing genuine interest in their work, and being respectful of their time.
Be clear about your goals. If the person you're speaking with knows exactly what you're looking for, they might be more likely to refer you to someone who can help.
Don't ask for a referral in every conversation. Sometimes, it's better to focus on building the relationship and asking insightful questions. You can always follow up later with a request for a referral.
Always express gratitude. Whether or not you get a referral, always thank the person for their time. This leaves a positive impression and keeps the door open for future interactions.
Remember, networking is a marathon, not a sprint. Keep at it, and don't get discouraged if you're not seeing immediate results. Good luck!
