Relocating for a summer internship

Hello,

I'm currently a sophomore at a top 20 and I'm currently still looking for a summer internship. I recently received an offer from an alum in Texas (I live in Atlanta) at a financial advisory firm. I was wondering if you think it is worth the cost to relocate to Texas (it's in a fairly upper class suburb) for the whole summer for that internship. I got a few other ones but only at a law firm, an insurance company. I can still make a few more calls to a few local finance firms but they'd be cold calls and not sure about the success rate.

Thanks

Yes, it's worth it if your other options aren't as good for you. Look for ways to decrease your housing costs in Texas (friends near there? friends of friends living there? Craigslist? etc.). Besides, next year you can spin it to say you were so passionate about what you wanted to do that you gladly relocated, and loved it. You'll get experience living somewhere else - makes you well-rounded.

What "costs" are you worried about other than those on dollar terms?

I'm assuming Dallas?

You'll be alright, rent is relatively cheap here. Plus there has to be plenty of UTD/SMU kids trying to sublet for the summer

2nd what Nabooru said, I actually went to Texas for a summer internship a few years back. Personally I thought it broadened my exposure (I'm from West Coast) and was a great talking point at interviews/work. I'm all for stability, but if you're even just breaking even on the venture I think it would be a good experience provided you have no better professional options elsewhere.

For what it's worth, my G-Tech colleague thoroughly enjoyed his time in Texas as well. We worked in Austin, in the case that your firm is located there...but Dallas seems more likely if it's finance.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it is with a small financial advisory firm in the suburbs of Dallas. I go to school in TN, and my family lives in GA, so it's somewhat far away. I'm not sure about staying in the suburbs of a new place for 3 months without knowing anyone in the area and especially because it's not in the city like NYC or LA, it could be quite boring and lonely.

I don't have TOO much options right now. I only have an offer from a intellectual property law firm and Aflac (insurance company), and those are local. The things is I can probably get more offers if I make a few more calls to local firms and network more with alumni, so not sure if I should committ now or wait it out.

If it's your best option at the end of the day, man up and take it. You'll find ways to have fun and meet people and be better off for it. Your career is more important than a few months of social life, if you wanna look at it that way

Just found out today this position is unpaid. So I might be paying out for housing and transportation. Do you think it is still worth going?
