Reneging but already received Signing Bonus

Signed back to a boutique from my SA stint last summer on the West Coast. Received an offer today for a FT role in NY and really want to take it because it’s a better bank and in NY. I’ve however already received my signing bonus from my SA bank and they’re also in the process of booking me tickets to NY for training.

Was wondering what the repercussions would be if I reneged this last minute? Does anyone also know how I’d go about returning the signing bonus to them?

Thanks for the help.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are the key points to consider regarding reneging after receiving a signing bonus:

Repercussions of Reneging:

  1. Professional Reputation:

    • Reneging on an offer can significantly damage your professional reputation. As noted in previous WSO threads, firms often communicate with each other, and word can spread quickly, potentially affecting future opportunities.
  2. Potential Blacklisting:

    • You may face blacklisting from the firm you renege on, and possibly from other firms within the same network. This is especially true if the firms are interconnected, as mentioned in the context.
  3. Ethical Considerations:

    • There are ethical implications to consider. Reneging can be seen as unprofessional and may reflect poorly on your character.

Returning the Signing Bonus:

  1. Contact HR:

    • The first step is to contact the HR department of the firm you are reneging on. Explain your situation and express your intention to return the signing bonus.
  2. Follow Their Process:

    • HR will likely provide you with the necessary steps to return the signing bonus. This may include specific instructions on how to transfer the funds back to the company.
  3. Document Everything:

    • Ensure that all communications and transactions are well-documented. This will help protect you in case of any disputes or misunderstandings.

Additional Considerations:

  • Timing: The closer you are to the start date, the more disruptive your decision will be for the firm. This can exacerbate the negative repercussions.
  • Transparency: Be as transparent and professional as possible in your communications. While reneging is generally frowned upon, handling the situation with integrity can mitigate some of the damage.

In summary, while reneging on an offer after receiving a signing bonus is possible, it comes with significant risks to your professional reputation and future career prospects. If you decide to proceed, contact HR to arrange the return of the signing bonus and handle the situation with as much professionalism and transparency as possible.
