Response to my thank you letters... subtle rejection?

I recently had an on campus interview for a position with a BB. I made it to final round, and was pretty confident in my performance.

I got along well with the interviewers (at least I thought I did), and I sent a few follow up emails.

The first email I sent was to someone who basically got me the interview. He wasn't an interviewer, but he came with the team to campus and we had casual conversation the entire time. I sent him an email thanking him for his time, for sending my resume in and I said that we should stay in touch (also provided my contact information).

He responded saying that the process is highly competitive, and that he hopes I keep my enthusiasm for all placement processes (other job interviews, I'm assuming). He then said good luck, and to keep him posted on my progress (with other firms, I'm assuming).

I sent my actual interviewer a thank you email, and he responded that it was great to see me again (we met before) and that our conversation was his pleasure. He then wished me the best of luck this school year and finished with "take care."

The interview was only YESTERDAY, but I'm assuming this is a clear "sorry, but no."

Honestly, I respect the answers, but it is kind of disheartening to get such a strong no before I'm even contacted by HR. Did I make some sort of fatal flaw in the interview?

I typically get no response, and I honestly feel like these responses are even worse than no response and even sort of strange. The other candidates were incredibly strong, I enjoyed our group case study, but I feel like I really f***** something up that they aren't telling me. Why not just send a generic response, and let HR deal with the rejection?

Any insight?

tl;dr: interviewers respond to thank you, but basically tell me I didn't get the job.
