Ridiculously Low Salary for a Multi-Billion Dollar Company located in high cost of living area? Next steps I should take

So I am currently in my junior year in America majoring in a Econ at a T25 university with a relatively high GPA (3.6-3.8). I have past experience in finance, hedge funds and M&A work. I met the CEO of this company at an event, and we talked a bit and I interviewed with the President of the company. Although it was taken private recently it still is a growth company with famous investors. They have been on a recruiting frenzy with the amount of growth they've had, and were looking for me to run an office overseas. I told them I need to complete my college degree, so I asked if I could do an internship. They said sure, but I'll be their first intern ever. Basically what I'm gathering is that my job would be just to shadow the President and deal with the investors. There's a lot of great exit opportunities here, and a lot of the upper/middle management at this place jumped from investment banks and other high-paying/cool positions. Its also just all around a sick job. It's in a high CoL area so I figured I was going to get a salary of at least 30 an hour and a relocation stipend, considering my whole background.

Here's the bad news. They took 2 months to give me a salary and are still working on the offer letter because they are so "busy". While I do believe they are busy, this is a ridiculous way to treat their first intern. They ended up giving me an offer of 17 an hour, well below living wage. My eyes bulged out of my head. I had a conversation with the President before and I told him I made 20 at my last and he said we can top that. I had a phone call with the chief of staff, and even she was surprised at that number. She said the Talent and Acquisition team came up with that number and she'll be talking to them about changing it. I said I need at least 25 and when she asked me if they can't do that, what would be good. I said a substantial housing stipend then. Apparently they didn't even have my resume even though I gave it to them, and so I'm praying that I get a decent pay considering my major, my GPA, my school, and my past work experience. I am assuming they just offered me so low because I'm their first intern, and 17 is the salary that comes up when you look at an average intern salary. But that doesn't take into account major, GPA ,school, past experience, AND how expensive the area is. I'm freaking out and I realized I probably need higher than 25, as that's barely living wage. I am going to wait and see what happens, but I really don't have a lot of other options. What should I do??????

Welcome to the real world.

Your major, gpa, and school really doesn’t mean shit. Better you learn that now.

Look, I think interns should be paid fairly/provided housing if needed. But you also need to understand that outside of the chance that you develop into a great employee for them, they’re really investing in you with little benefit for them. Interns are a great way to make better hires, but they aren’t around long enough to provide value and need a lot of resources dedicated to them.

As for the offer, you either accept it or you don’t. In your case, you negotiated and maybe you’ll get what you asked for. If not, you consider if the opportunity is worth it and if it isn’t, hopefully you have something else you can pursue.

I have maybe one or two other options to pursue. This is BS though for a 5 billion dollar company owned by one of Wall Streets biggest players. The living wage is 25 and minimum wage is 15.
