Are you talking about hedge fund/equity research this summer and IBD the following summer? If you want IBD you should try your best to get into a BB this summer. If not, and you want IBD the following summer, you are going to need a great GPA, and you will probably want to do equity research somewhere that has some sort of a training program. At a hedge fund you will not be taught much of anything - you are expected to have experience and know what you are doing. Try to get into an equity research firm where you can work with analysts and learn the basics of equity research and modeling. Plus you will get to ask questions and learn a lot just by working with the analysts. At a hedge fund everyone is busy and will not waste time trying to teach you things you should already know.
HF are too busy to teach you things--you basically have to learn by observation. If you wanted S&T, I might say go HF. But, since you want IBD, equity research is the way to go. It will give you a lot of great experiences to talk about during IB interviews (modeling, company fundamentals, etc).
