Are you talking about hedge fund/equity research this summer and IBD the following summer? If you want IBD you should try your best to get into a BB this summer. If not, and you want IBD the following summer, you are going to need a great GPA, and you will probably want to do equity research somewhere that has some sort of a training program. At a hedge fund you will not be taught much of anything - you are expected to have experience and know what you are doing. Try to get into an equity research firm where you can work with analysts and learn the basics of equity research and modeling. Plus you will get to ask questions and learn a lot just by working with the analysts. At a hedge fund everyone is busy and will not waste time trying to teach you things you should already know.

tryin to get an ibd internship next summer i'm currently a sophomore at a non-target (maybe a semi target). just wondering if i should go for the hedge fund or the equity research firm (this summer) which one is more relevant? i'm hoping to get some financial modeling experience. thanks
If you don't end up with an internship, look to get some modeling experience independently. Wall street prep is a good one and you can buy them used for $50-100.
