Senior Dilemma... Be direct or indirect?

Hello WSO,

Im currently a senior who is looking to graduate in less than 2 weeks. Since I have a very low GPA and no experience, I thought about just taking a shitty job but decided to fuk it and pursue my dream whatever it takes. So I have made a whole list of boutique banks that I would like to consider working for. The dilemma for me right now is that, when I cold call them, should I ask them for an informational interview or ask them directly for an unpaid internship? Since I have a very limited time now, I was thinking of asking MDs directly for an internship position. Please feel free to comment or give me direction as to how should use my time wisely. Also, how high is the probability of converting an unpaid internship into a full time offer?

Thank you so much for your time.
Best.

Ask for an informational interview and a time that is most convenient for them to speak. Then when you actually call them, give your pitch, ask questions etc and at the end, say you're interested in internships at their firm and if there were any opportunities. Hard to answer your second question, as it greatly varies from firm to firm. Just kill it, do well and I'm sure they can help you out, if not they can introduce you to people.

I would expand your list from boutiques you would "consider" working for to every financial institution within a 50 mile radius that operates in the space you have an interest in.
