Should I rescind my internship application to apply for a different position within the same company

This is most likely a dumb question, but I really don’t want to make a mistake. I am already late to my application process, but a new asset management position has opened at a middle market firm. I have already applied for for the corporate finance position, however I would far prefer orienting myself towards asset management.

Should I resend my initial application and apply to the new asset management position, or have an application pending for both positions?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:

  1. Check the Company's Policy: Many firms allow candidates to apply for multiple positions simultaneously, especially if the roles are in different departments. Before making any decisions, confirm whether the company permits multiple applications. This information is often available on their careers page or by reaching out to HR.

  2. Avoid Rescinding Prematurely: Rescinding your corporate finance application without confirmation that you can apply for the asset management role might leave you with no options. Instead, consider applying for the asset management position while keeping your corporate finance application active, if the company allows it.

  3. Tailor Your Application: If you decide to apply for the asset management role, ensure your resume and cover letter are specifically tailored to highlight skills and experiences relevant to asset management. This will demonstrate your genuine interest and suitability for the role.

  4. Communicate with HR: If you're unsure about the process or want to clarify your intentions, reach out to the HR team. Politely explain your preference for the asset management role and inquire about the best course of action. Transparency can work in your favor.

  5. Timing is Key: Since you're already late in the application process, act quickly. Delays could reduce your chances of being considered for either position.

Ultimately, applying for both positions (if allowed) is often the safest route. It keeps your options open while showing interest in the company. If forced to choose, prioritize the role that aligns best with your long-term career goals.
