Suit for recruiter meeting?
I spoke with a recruiter on the phone and everything went well. He wants me to come in so he can meet me first before sending my info along to this one particular company. We don't even have a time set up yet, just a "hey I'll call you on Tuesday and we'll have you come down." Normally, I'm pretty pro-suit but it just doesn't feel right in this situation. The guy isn't even wearing a suit himself on his webpage bio pic. Plus the prestige level of recruiter and job appear to be low to average (not talking goldman type stuff here).
So then, shall I go with gut and keep it business casual or do I bring out the suit? Thanks.
No. Wear a suit always. If you're angling for any sort of finance (Wall St or corporate), consulting, or any professional job always wear a suit unless they specifically say to come business casual or otherwise. It never hurts being overdressed in a suit but can kill you if you aren't, especially at more entry level jobs. We interviewed a 50+ year old for a porfolio CFO position who came in dress slacks and a sports coat and he could get away with it but he had previously been a divisional CFO for a F10 company who controlled a balance sheet and p&L in the tens of billions. He could do it.
Unless you're going for tech or some sort of creative job. Then a suit can definitely hurt.
Merrill Lynch meet with recruiters Dress? (Originally Posted: 10/10/2007)
I have a fifteen-to-thirty minute meet-and-greet tomorrow with two recruiters from ML for Global Markets & Investment Banking. Should I dress business casual or go all out and wear a suit? We're meeting at an on-campus sandwich place if that adds any info.
Also, what exactly does Global Markets mean? I've never understood the term exactly.
Thanks in advance.
Go in a suit - I assume they're on campus for interviews so they'll most likely be dressed business professional. You can always take off the jacket if not. Global Markets & Investment Banking is ML's S&T and IBK group. They're all under one umbrella, although the recruiters will be focused on either IBK or S&T recruiting.
It's not a full-on interview though, does that change things? The description is here:
"Recruiters from Merrill Lynch will be available at Cosi from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm on Thursday, October 11 to speak with current juniors about their programs. Slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis."
They are going to be in suits so you should too.
Yeah, especially when you're coming from Northwestern.
Like I said wear a suit. Why wouldn't you? For fear of impressing them?

Do you need to dress in any specific way when your seeing a headhunter?
play it safe go in with a suit.
I would treat your conversations with them as interviews - they are doing prescreening for their clients, so prepare and highlight things such as deal experience that you think would make you stand out from others whom they're speaking to
