Summer internship for first year students in top targets? (UK)

As an incoming first-year student, I have to say that I'm quite concerned about finding a summer internship during my first-year summer. I looked around LinkedIn and it seemed that only some Oxbridge people, who are currently working at BB/EBs had an internship during their first-year summer and 99% of those internships were not done in the UK or a large name financial institution.

What type of opportunities is open to first-year students then? Has the environment changed in the past two years at all?

Appreciate the insight.

Why are you concerned about finding a summer internship during your first-year? Its really not standard at all and most that do them, especially outside of Oxbridge, tend to do them at smaller shops and brokerages to gain experience. A first year-summer is wholly unimportant in comparison to landing a convertible spring week which should be your main concern right now.

In terms of landing a first year summer - since they're not generally standard structures (unlike Bank of England), you'll need to network/cold email to land one.

In the UK work ex like that pre and during first year is not common at all. Just focus on spring weeks and you'll be fine, the summer should be a good backup tool incase springs don't go so well.
