Talking to MDs who don't have IB exp
I have a call coming up with a MD of a top investment bank. The MD can make relationship hires fyi. Anyways, the MD was a lawyer before this and was pretty much brought into the bank because of his connections. So he obviously has experience in doing IB deals but doesn't have any experience in building financial models, etc. So during the call, what kind of questions should I ask him?
I'm new to networking. Since you guys are more experienced, please provide me with some insights.
You shouldn't really be talking about detailed modeling questions in an informational interview any way. Let the conversation flow. Cover his career, why you love banking, why did he switch over, whats the bank like, typical day to day. Ask about something you read in the newspaper that his bank did? Ect.
You could also talk about sports, college, whatever. I go into an informational interview with maybe 5 detailed questions and I let the rest flow. You will think of questions to ask during the interview as the conversation touches on different subject.
What made you decide to shift careers? What do you like more/less about banking than being a lawyer, what similarities/differences
fyi, whether the MD interviewing you has years of investment banking experience or not, NEVER ask them about financial modeling- they don't give a shit.
