Thoughts on Applied Economics MSc

Hi guys, to keep it short for you,

I studied business for 4 years. Didn't really yield much from this degree except a job in insurance after some time unwmployed, and I regret a lot of it.

Now looking to do part time MSc maybe while working (haven't decided yet, depends on work of course) and while I consider finance, applied economics caught my eye.

What are your thoughts on applied economics as a degree for investment banking, management consulting or investment services related jobs

Thanks a lot for your time,

Have a weekend

Hey there!

An Applied Economics MSc can certainly be a valuable degree in the world of finance. It provides a strong foundation in economic theories and principles, and their practical applications in the real world. This can be particularly useful in roles such as investment banking and management consulting, where understanding economic trends and their impact on businesses is crucial.

However, it's important to remember that breaking into these industries often requires more than just a relevant degree. Networking, internships, and practical experience are also key. For example, if you have an uncle who is a MD at Barclays Capital, try and get him to get you any experience he can.

In terms of investment services, an Applied Economics MSc could also be beneficial. It could provide you with the analytical skills needed to understand and interpret financial markets, which is a key part of many roles within this industry.

But remember, the degree you do does start to become more relevant after certain top-tier universities. For example, theoretically, it will be 'easier' for someone with a Geography degree from Oxford to get into Banking than someone with a Geography degree from York.

So, while an Applied Economics MSc could certainly be a good choice, it's also important to consider the reputation of the university you'll be studying at, and to make sure you're also gaining practical experience and making connections within the industry.

Hope this helps, and have a great weekend!
