Time to start looking for a new job?

A couple months ago I posted about not liking my job a month after starting, the general consensus seemed to be to stick it out but we’re back to it.

I’ll give a quick background on everything, but I’m now going on 6 months into the job and not much has changed.

Last December I accepted a position in FP&A at a F200 Biotech company. About 3 weeks before my graduation date and a month before my start date they called me saying they’d like to move me onto a different team (pricing) and asked if I’d be interested. I wasn’t super thrilled about it, but having already signed a lease and being so close to graduation I decided to run with it. And coming from an ultra non-target I was scared I wouldn’t have gotten anything else had I told them no.

Anyway, about a week before graduation I had a call with my new manager and he explained the group / role to me. The way he explained it to me made it seem like I would be working on the deal approval process (forecasting P&L’s, contract approval, etc.) which all sounded pretty interesting to me, so I was at least hopeful going in.

When I started I found out I wasn’t going to be doing any of that. I’m pretty much a glorified AR/AP person with a hint of reporting and reconciliation. (I literally have to request and mail checks to certain customers, I don’t know why accounting or AP doesn’t do this.). Now I have gotten to build two models to calculate things like fees, and rebates based off contract terms, but now that that’s done, I’m back to just copying and pasting data into models every week, at the same time, and to the same people. Besides building the models my whole job is essentialy CTRL + C and CTRL + V.

About a week ago my director told me he wants to move me into a contract compliance role next year. I have no desire to do this, I find this all boring and I don’t want to work with the sales team anymore than I already do (and would prefer less). I want to get back into FP&A (my junior internship was in corporate FP&A) and none of this is helping me, I feel like I’ll just get stuck doing this.

I’ve only been here 6 months, and my managers have been great to me so I don’t want to screw them. But is it too early to get out of here? I want to get to NYC and into an FP&A role, but I dont know how hard it’s going to be.
